Reddit Comment on Why Dox Plus Death Threats Are Always “Credible”

Share

Read the quoted Reddit comment for a helpful explanation of why online threats are always credible, even if they are not likely:

It’s OK – it’s something that people going about their day-to-day normally don’t have to go through. Certainly they shouldn’t have to.

Consider the credible death threat, and the many ways it disproportionally impacts the target versus the perpetrator(s).

Credible doesn’t have to be real to be credible.

Is it just some dumb teenager in Des Moines who hasn’t grown up enough to know there’s a human being on the other end of his newly-found power in presumed anonymity? Or is it a deeply deranged veteran who never received proper treatment and is as likely to lash out at you as, say, students at UT or the FBI in Oklahoma? Or is it some poor shlub who never caught a break but TODAY yes TODAY I will be a MAN and DO SOMETHING with my shiny new firearm? Or is it some tormented person who just doesn’t know where the lines between criticism, harassment, creepiness, and blatancy are drawn?

Or is it all of them and more in the mix?

So you’ve got this death threat. It reads as/sounds sincere. It includes your home address. Or your work address and work hours. Or one or more of your telephone numbers. Or a photo of you in a candid but unaware moment.

So now you get to decide: do I panic? Or do I fucking panic? Do I buy a gun? If I have a gun, do I keep it more readily at hand? Dare I take a bus, or a cab, or Uber, or the L? Is my home alarm system up to the challenge? Do I warn my boss and head of facility security, and how do I have that conversation with them? Do I call my family and give them a heads-up? My friends? Costco security camera system vs. professional installation, pros and cons? And that assumes you have the freaking resources to do jackall about your circumstances on a good day.

And then you remember that there are black hat hackers in the mix. So now you’re on the phone with your bank or credit union and changing all your passwords and (if you’re savvy and lucky) stumbling across the Gamergate Survival Guide and battening down the hatches on any blogs and websites you control.

Because some post you made somewhere sometime attracted the Eye Of Sauron.

But then, on top of all that, your chosen profession REQUIRES that you have a public online presence. Under your name. You have to work shifts. Make meetings. Attend industry events. Have a fucking social life. Interact with others in your community, plus vendors, plus consumers, plus collaborators, plus the press.

When someone just learned that you like to meet people at X place (because it’s near work) at Y time (because it’s your lunchtime or whatever) and posted it on Twitter … along with a link to a sweet sniper rifle and the day’s wind speed & direction in the area.

No, being in the same physical space with probably peaceful people wouldn’t make me feel safer if I got such a threat. I’m a goddamn gamer. I don’t even have to put myself in the shoes of the women on the receiving end of this shit; it’s fucking OBVIOUS. Just as obvious as those who, well aware of all the above ambiguities, happily mock and insult these same targets when they (NO SHIT) err on the side of caution. And flee their homes.
